Healthcare Financial ServicesJuly 2010 – State-of-the-Art Systems for Modern Office Building

Healthcare Financial Services, LLC commissioned CDFL to design a contemporary office building that would convey their commitment to excellence and professionalism in serving their clients.  Our team delivered with the stylish, ‘open-plan’ facility on Flynt Drive, which features expansive, high ceilings and minimal interior hard walls.  State-of-the-art electrical, HVAC and data systems are located under the flooring, which conceals the equipment and promotes floor plan flexibility.  Applied elsewhere in the world for many years, underfloor air distribution (UAD) has made its way into a small but growing number of major U. S. office facilities.  UAD is designed to emanate from the floor level, with only enough pressure to heat or cool the occupant zone. Interior office walls of glass create an unobstructed view, and promote a sense of accessibility and assurance.  Tall bays and clerestory windows allow efficient maximization of natural lighting.

Ole Miss Residential CollegesNovember 2009 – Ole Miss Residential Colleges Recognized by ABC

The Associated Builders & Contractors of Mississippi have presented the Residential Colleges (South College) at the University of Mississippi with a 2009 Excellence in Construction Award in the Institutional / Mechanical category.

Designers CDFL and Eley Associates/Architects drew inspiration from similar projects at British Universities Oxford and Cambridge. The innovative facilities create a living and learning environment that strengthens connections between the residents – students, faculty and staff – and provides a sense of community that encourages academic, intellectual and personal growth and development. The first of the two colleges, constructed by Harrell Contracting Group, was completed and occupied in August 2009. The second is slated for completion in August 2010.

CDFL lead mechanical engineer, Bob Byrd, PE, accepted the award on November 6 at the ABC Merit Awards Ceremony at the Country Club of Jackson.

Barchitecture Benefitting the Community Animal Rescue LeagueOctober 2009 – Animal House Party "Barkitecture" benefitting the Community Animal Rescue League

The Community Animal Rescue League (CARA), a Jackson area no-kill animal shelter, held its annual Animal House
Party at Hal and Mal’s Restaurant on October 22. Each year, architecture firms and contractors team up to design and build dog houses which go to the highest bidder at a live auction to raise funds for the shelter.

CDFL's design entry for this year is an indoor "Coffee Table Kennel." The sleek, dual-purpose piece is made of white
solid surface, a blue 3-Form top and bottom, and metal
legs. Beveled cutouts provide air flow and a view of the surroundings to the dog, and a guillotine door easily slides
up and down for entry and exit.

Many thanks to CARA and those dedicated to the 300+ animals currently sheltered there.

The piece was designed by our CDFL team and built by Southeastern Architectural Woodworks, Inc. with materials provided by Glen Jones Associates and 3 Form.

University of Mississippi Medical CenterOctober 2009 – Master Plan for University of Mississippi Medical Center

Development continues on the new master plan for the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Local firms CDFL and Eley Associates/Architects formed a joint venture with Boston architecture firm Sasaki Associates, Inc. and Minneapolis financial consultants Kurt Salmon Associates in June 2009 to advance UMMC as a premier academic health science center.

The joint venture is defining the physical, programmatic, social and educational objectives of the University and planning a development strategy designed to carry the campus for 50 additional years. The plan strives for maximum integration of three specific areas – research, education, and clinical healthcare. Special consideration is being given to historical preservation and environmentally friendly solutions during the design effort. Rob Farr, CDFL president and lead developer of the master facilities plan said, “This (master plan) is an active, dynamic and living document. It is vested in the knowledge and the intellect of Medical Center leadership. As leadership changes or as knowledge grows, the governance model will allow the plan to change smoothly and competently.” The project is slated for completion in February of 2010.

Rendering of Redstone Test CenterSeptember 2009 – CDFL Designs High-Tech Hangar

Ground was recently broken on the $46,000,000 Rotary Wing Center Hangar Facility and Redstone Test Center Headquarters at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The steel frame building for the maintenance and testing of Army rotorcraft/helicopters encompasses 126,287 sf total.

Flexible, high-bay spaces of approximately 72,000 sf concurrently house a variety of aircraft for maintenance, including up to four CH-47 Chinook and six UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. Hangar doors provide clear openings of up to 140 feet wide and 39 feet high and translucent wall panels in key areas provide natural daylight when hangar doors are closed.

The hangar also includes 33,200 sf of space for the Flight Test Control Center, Flight Operations and administrative functions, including private and open workspaces. A 12,600 sf maintenance area contains tools, sheet metal, avionics, life support equipment, and weight and balance shops.

The new facilities will augment the efforts to make Redstone Arsenal the Army's Aviation Technology Center of Excellence.  "We are doing things to take it to the next level," said Major General Jim Myles, head of Redstone’s Aviation and Missile Command. "This will allow us to enhance our Aviation Technology Center of Excellence. This will be a key enabler."
