Casey Elementary Ribbon Cutting and Arts Award PresentationJackson Public Schools website
JACKSON October 26, 2009 — Casey Elementary held a ribbon cutting for its new classroom addition Thursday, October 22 followed by an open house of the new wing and a reception for parents and guests.
The construction of the new wing was funded by the $150 million school bond referendum approved by voters in November 2006. The new wing will help alleviate overcrowding and eliminate the need for portables.
The new 15,144 square foot education wing has 10 classrooms, a teacher's workroom, a PTA workroom, speech workroom, and restrooms. Because of Casey's emphasis on integrating the arts into the regular curriculum, the 10 new classrooms include a strings classroom, a visual arts classroom, a dance/drama classroom, and a music classroom.
During the evening, Malcom White, director of the Mississippi Arts Commission, presented the school with the Model Whole School Award. This distinction is based on an on-site panel review of the school, evidence of superior instruction through the arts for every student, continuous training of educators in arts integration, and the inclusion of an open door policy to all visitors interested in arts based school improvement methodology.
The new wing was designed by Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons, LTD, and cost $2,242,500. Barnard & Sons Construction was the contractor. The program manager was Jacobs/Preferred Management Group.
