Building progress of Kats' Wine CellarKats construction gets underway

Mississippi Business Journal

Jackson, MS June 14, 2007—Construction has commenced on the new location of Kats Wine Cellar on Fortification Street in the Capital City. Cost of the project was not disclosed.

Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons, Ltd., Architects and Engineers, P.A., (CDFL) designed phase one of the multi-tenant facility that is the first endeavor to satisfy the new multi-use zoning plans in accordance with the Fortification Street revitalization effort.

Neighborhood organizations such as the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation along with city officials have employed “The Main Street Approach” developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The incremental program advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment and the rebuilding commercial districts based on distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership and a sense of community. Kats’ new home occupies a lot where an abandoned house stood until the winter of 2006. CDFL positioned the building with the façade directly facing the street and opening onto the sidewalk to encourage pedestrian use and foster a “small town, shop-at-home” feel. The architecture of the 2,500-square-foot building will be a modernist interpretation of Belhaven neighborhood classics, most notably Primos restaurant that was destroyed by fire in 1994.

Construction is slated for completion by September 2007 with site preparation for phase two beginning by the end of the year.
