Mathematics and Science Building

Alcorn State University

This classroom and laboratory facility is the home of the University’s chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and computer science departments. Prominently sited on the campus’ northwest corner, this 63,000-square foot undergraduate teaching facility houses fifteen laboratories, eight general classrooms, an animal research suite, and a 150-seat lecture hall. The L-shaped building converges around a three-story central atrium, minimizing circulation space.  Each department is laid out on a single floor with administrative suites and research offices opposite their respective laboratories. While the exterior skin of brick and limestone under a pitched metal roof recalls the adjacent original nineteenth-century campus structures, the attic space created by the sloped roof serves as the fan loft for the lab hoods. Outside, a student plaza offers opportunities for quiet gatherings and individual study.
