Jackson State University

This 89,880-square foot high-tech facility establishes a new gateway to the western campus of Jackson State University, and provides a much needed new home for the schools engineering program. Designed as a teaching tool, the various construction systems are exposed through transparent finishes. This project exemplifies the integrated design approach essential to achieving sustainability.  The building responds to the climatic conditions of its site and the functional and operational needs of its occupants. The orientation and plan organization is designed to maximize passive shading and day-lighting techniques in all classrooms and labs. Generous roof overhangs protect windows from direct sun exposure, while light shelves reflect glare-free natural light deep within the building.  Interior materials were selected based on recycled content, low VOCs, and low maintenance finishes, providing a healthy work environment for students and faculty.
