A new boulevard was created to tie the Mississippi State Fairgrounds primary venue, the Coliseum, to its main traffic artery, High Street. As part of a larger renovation project, CDFL was commissioned to design an appropriate gateway image for the Fairgrounds, sited at this highly visible node. The forms and shapes of the entrance structure grew out of the images of the fair itself—an eclectic mix of farm buildings, exhibits and rides on metal structures tenuously held together by cables and pinned connections. The tension of the architecture is a reflection of the nature of this ingress/egress zone, where at this singular point, one is truly in neither realm. Materials were chosen for their durability and their relation to the surrounding industrial context.
