Fort Knox

CDFL’s work at Ft. Knox consists of over 700,000 square feet of multiple building types including Company Operations Facilities, Barracks, Headquarters facilities, and a Dining facility. For every project, CDFL provided a full range of design and engineering services. All buildings were designed for energy efficiency and are LEED® Silver certifiable.

The Warrior in Transition Barracks provides housing for soldiers, injured in the line of duty, during the rehabilitation stage of their recovery. Careful consideration was taken during design to select interior finishes that create a tranquil environment through the use of therapeutic colors and textures. The facility includes rehabilitation areas and a Healing Garden for outdoor relaxation and therapy. The site and facility is designed to encourage individuals to engage with each other during the healing process.

The Company Operations Complex consists of seven battalions located in six separate facilities, each comprised of three components: a two-story Administration Building, a multi-level Readiness Building, and a Covered Hardstand Structure. Each of the six Company Operations Buildings varies in size and number of soldiers served.

The IBCT Dining Facility was designed to be a complete and functional Dining Facility feeding 1,300 soldiers per meal within a 90 minute time frame, three times per day, and 365 days per year. The HVAC system utilizes a geothermal ground loop, water source heat pump system designed to meet heating and cooling requirements. This strategy was crucial in meeting the 40% energy reduction goals of the project.

CDFL has also provided design services for the 19th Engineering Battalion Complex which serves over 800 Battalion personnel. The complex consists of Barracks facilities, Company Operations Facilities, and Headquarters facilities. The complex utilizes a centralized geothermal ground loop system providing an energy efficient HVAC system reducing energy demand and cost.
